zuky:
She should go down to one of the camps. The conversation almost never stops at Wall Street. And most of these Tent Cities are themselves models of what we’d like society to look like in the future. The concept that it will take a long time is one of the most agreed-upon things in the movement. So, I think any group of OWS Occupiers would love to hear from her in person and hear about her experiences!
Why would they, “not wanna hear” any of that? Most of us are already talking about everything she just said.
I think before anybody else feels the need to editorialize OWS, you need to get down to your camp, attend a General Assembly meeting, and see it with your own eyes. So that at least your commentary will be logical.
Now here is someone I will listen to about #OWS Grace Lee Boggs, friends.
Grace Lee Boggs speaks to OWS with some really simple advice I don’t think they wanna hear…
It’s interesting that you would go straight to an assumption that people haven’t been to any meetings, haven’t seen what is going on, and are “illogical”. No. First of all, who the FUCK are you to not know who Grace Lee Boggs is and the history of real work that she has done for DECADES to even get your sorry asses to the point that you could conceive of your current movement? You think she hasn’t been to the camps in her own city? You think she doesn’t know what she is talking about?
Everything I have seen of this movement is racist, it is white-centric, it is about upholding white supremacy. I do not doubt what you are saying - that there are many sincere people trying to do really sincere work. But the vast majority? The reality? “Many of you would be happy to be part of Wall Street”. Every critique that is made of issues in the movement - thoughtless use of hateful words like “occupy” and “slavery”, intentional pushing out of PoC, Native women being beaten by organizers (yes, at OWS), city after city engaging in cultural appropriation, demands for “unity” that begin and end with white people remaining on top and the rest of us serving them - have been met with downright violent response online and in real life.
But I’m sure you think none of that shit happens and an ICON like Grace Lee Boggs is just as “illogical” as queer woman of color who has been physically threatened and harassed by your movement supporters from all over this country and her own city.
I think before anybody feels the need to editorialize on Grace Lee Boggs — one of the greatest living US American activists and certainly an iconic figure in Asian American history — you need to get to one of her camps, read some of her dozens of books and essays on revolutionary movement-building, attend some of her talks with a civic group or community garden, and see it with your own eyes, so that at least your commentary will be logical.
Seriously, the haughty self-congratulatory ignorance of some of these OWS fandom followers is exactly part of the problem which Grace Lee Boggs is addressing, and in fact the clueless, arrogant, unrealistic response above (“Come to one of our camps if you’re gonna open your damn mouth, you illogical old Chinese person in a wheelchair!”) illustrates that many of these people do not want to hear it — and they definitely don’t wanna hear any critique from people of color.
ok—to me, this speaks of just so many things…first. tim wise can spout his ass out of his ear, and we all get told what a mighty amazing thinker he is. he specifically states: i’m no good at organizing so I stopped doing it. and now all he does is speak gloriously and toss his flowing hair for everybody to go oooooooh, to.
Grace Lee Boggs is one of the most influential *ORGANIZERS* in the US—and is STILL organizing at almost a 100 years old. Sure she’s not doing what she used to—but she’s almost 100 damn years old.And *she’s* being lectured about “going down to the camps so she can see how illogical she is”????? She, who is still organizing in her own hometown, still an incredibly active part of her community, still a leader that people won’t act until they’ve heard from her because she acts as a compass…she, who is a writer and a thinker and who never said, I’m not much of an organizer, I’m just going to take money for giving speeches and promoting myself??
Why do other people (i.e. white men specifically, but also white women) get to be “thinkers” and we all just accept that they aren’t good at organizing and don’t demand that from them before we call them leaders—but at 96 years old, a chinese woman from Detroit has to “prove” herself by getting down into the camps?
***shaking my head***
If there is no place for Detroit ELDERs who have worked their entire lives to make transformative changes rather than perfecting the art of promotion in the thinking of young organizers, then we have truly reached a time of travesty and hopelessness.
I still can not out even COMPREHEND the idea that anyone had the DAMN NERVE to come out tehir mouth at a damn near 100 year old woman PERIOD. That makes me angry
The fact it was GRACE LEE BOGGS.
LEMME SAY AGAIN
GRACE LEE BOGGS
like that’s just a fight like i can nor
THIS! That is SO what I was thinking! Even if you don’t know who Grace Lee Boggs is, this is a 96 year old woman of color who is telling you something. Muhfucka that means you LISTEN!
This is one of the big problems with the occupation movement; this huge cultural disconnect. For a lot of us it is inconceivable not to listen to an elder because she is an elder. For a lot of these other folks, they see her age and history as no inherent reason to take her seriously. They have no concept of this whatsoever.
word. no comprendo the white people. disconnect and half.
